I am starting a new job on Monday in the field of finance, and I am very nervous. I am nervous because I will be learning alot of new things, and also because some say those in finance are obsessed with money. Yet, here is a chance to stay true to myself and my life goals no matter what. Finance requires a thick skin, but this will be a great way for me to strengthen my personality, and stop caring about what people think of me. It is a time where I have to let my work and my true self speak for me and be unaffected by the opinions of others around me, and be true to myself by just being me and not projecting an image. I am nervous about the new projects, but all I can do is try my best. This is not my dream job, certainly, but by spending minimally, I can save money and perhaps, freelance later on. I am not putting a time frame on that though because I want to stay at this job and get good at it. Last time I worked in finance, I spent a great deal of money on clothing, most of which I ended up donating because I only bought them to develop a corporate image. Yet, I have realized we can look great and presentable for our jobs, without engaging in excessive shopping binges and without becoming someone we are not. Here’s a great post on how to stay sane at work.
Good luck with the job. Remember that “whoever” you project at work can just be a mask for the corporate work. Focus on who you really are and the things that define you on your own terms and on your own time. Getting out of debt, saving some cash, and getting work experience is all a means to an end; the end is the freedom to decide life on your own terms…
